Beside me

A walking group generally consists of the leader and the “whip”. Destinations are clear, expectations set, orientation established and navigation routes devised. (Crutches obviously ditched!). There’s a confident sense of excitement, underpinned with a tentative curiosity and introspection as to the trail, its requirements, and one’s own capacity to meet the demands of the territory, distance and pace.

The steady rhythm of footsteps settle like a metronome, shuffling between andantino and allegro, while kilometres are clocked and collective identity shared and shaped. Stories are traded, souls uncovered, friendships nourished and richness revelled. Landscape forms the language of energy, engagement and desire; perspiring gain, loss, growth, achievement, pain and pleasure. Participation in the path is primary. Dedication to direction a requisite.

“It’s your road and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.” Rumi.

Walking through fear, crawling through pain, running through joy. When tempo and position render inconsequent; direction blurred and contour lines narrow. The bollards of companionship are remedying, a steady presence solacing; encouraging, supporting and enfolding . An indefatigable walking ‘with’, and unfailing meandering ‘next to’. Creating footsteps of friendship; solidifying purpose, celebrating direction and a sacred kindred. A synchronous choice to tread the path un-travelled with resoluteness ad libitum – tempo comodo, poco a poco.

For the special people in my life who have walked, and continue to walk at my pace.
