We’ve about used up all the synonyms for ‘beautiful’ travelling this countryside. Adjectives such as spectacular, dramatic, striking, eye-catching, breathtaking, glorious and of course ace, cool, awesome and grouse don’t seem to do justice to the ever unfolding layers of natural wonder. Dramatic juxtapositions of rugged and serene, gentle and ferocious, grandious and unpretentious; prompt the questions, “Can anything top this?”, “How do you rank beauty?”, “How do you begin to describe beauty?”

To wax lyrical, or borrow from those much wiser, there are volumes of past considerations on the same topic:
“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.” Shakespere

“When Nature has work to be done, she creates a genius to do it.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

“In his hand are the depths of the earth;
    the heights of the mountains are his also.
 The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.” Psalm 95:4-5

Hiking through the canyon area; beauty triggers, almost demands a reaction, a response. Offering up a challenge to those who inhale its intoxicating fragrance. A sense of humility in the presence of awe.  With hard rocks, uplifting and ancient volcanoes laying hand to the creation of such breathtaking splendour. At the Black Canyon of the Gunnison; early explorer’s tenacity and audacity, their volcanic determination intrudes into the molten rock fractures and sedimentary joints of the vertical cliffs. Dizzying views and canyons dwarfing the size of the Empire State Building form intimidating  sheer drops and sombre countenance. An unspoken impenetrable/unwavering self-esteem, as slow geologic forces, (the width of a hair per year), erode away at this landscape.

Spurred on by the magnificence and possibility of this place, explorers were not deterred. Their vision and enthusiasm an infectious response to the challenges of nature. Laying claim to an earthly and human partnership. They rode the stream and shaped the dream.
